Nylon Crossover Guitars

Nylon string guitars are extremely versatile, having a wide dynamic range and a large pallet of tone color. Many players of contemporary music, currently playing steel string instruments, want to play nylon string guitars to bring new sounds to their repetoire. These crossover instruments are very well suited not only to accompaniment, but to Latin and jazz plus the classical literature and other styles.

Expressions! has found a following for a slightly larger body nylon string guitars (the OM shape). Their tonal color is enhanced with different construction and bracing drawn from classical guitar construction and modified for ease in playing modern music. Additionally, the neck is a little narrower (1 7/8") than the 2 - 2 1/4" width typical of classical guitars. Also, the neck is radiused, making playing easier for many, especially those who are comfortable with steel string and electric guitars.

The nylon crossover is built with Sitka spruce or western red cedar top and Indian rosewood or mahogany back and sides. The fretboard and bridge are rosewood and the binding is ivroid or tortoise. Many options and wood choices are available for custom order.

Base price for the standard crossover is $2200.

Please enjoy the following audio of this guitar being played by the amazing North Carolina jazz guitarist, Marc Yaxley:

This is a recently built crossover guitar, nylon strings, and electronic pickup system.

The top is western red cedar and the back and sides are cocobolo, a scarce Mexican rosewood. The bindings are flame maple and the neck is a five-piece lamination of mahogany and walnut. The fretboard is ebony and the bridge is rosewood. The rosette was made with walnut burl. The tuning machines are Schaller classical. The sound is warm and rich with great articulation.
